Finding balance is key to a piece of art that draws the eye and is appealing. My theme is a project that exudes simplicity and mundaneness, but using glaze to keep it visually interesting. I felt that a complex shape and glaze would be too much, and too busy, but focusing on a rendition that was clean, would make a perfect canvas to have a more complex glaze, so that that would be what people noticed.

I have many examples of projects with a clean form, but multifaceted glaze. My latest project is a large wide vase, with a thick lip. the design is clean, and delivers a blunt image of what, in my opinion, and wide, rounded vase should look like. it is simple and has nothing extra or fancy. The glaze is gutsy and I chose to completely glaze the inside in green, but splatter painted the outside. It has no clear glaze under the splatter, and it makes it rough and a bit rustic which I like. It is visually interesting to look at. Another one of my theme choices is also a vase, but is taller and the lip is much more subtle. The project is graceful, with only the slight outturn for the lip. The glaze on that project is not quite as hard to achieve as some of the other, but the effect is great. I glazed half in midnight blue and the other half in the speckled white, but had some overlap, which created a very stunning light, speckled blue. The middle ground where the overlap occurred also has wonderful movement. My choice project is another good example. This project is not quite as basal as the other, but is still a good rendition. The project is a very tall vase with a wavy lip. The glaze is very complex though. Half of the inside is glazed in green the other half in white, but the outside I did a swooped glaze is a different area of the vase in the green which creates a good visually interesting piece. To create the pieces that had the effect of creating a visually interesting project with a focus on the glazes, I tried to make projects that were as simple as possible. My other focus when I was throwing these projects was to strive to make sure they were as centered as possible, and pulled up as much as they could be. If they were going to be simple projects, then they would be as close to perfect as I could get them. I wanted very good renditions of the projects that I was striving to make. When it came time to glaze I really wanted to make sure that that is what made the piece visually interesting. I wanted the glazes to make the project come alive, and really take it to another level. I tried many different techniques and one of mu favorites was splatter paint. I accompanied the splatter painted project with a fully glazed interior. I loved the effect that that brought. I also tried overlapping glazes which also had a lovely effect. It created movement in the middle, and actually turned out to be one of the most noticed pieces that I made. I also tried glazing different parts of my projects in different blocks and mixing shapes. I liked those techniques less, but still felt that they brought visual appeal. The thematic trend of my projects was the use of simplicity and complexity, together to make a visually interesting project, while the actual project was not visually interesting. I feel that I accomplished fairly well. The theme was not my favorite because I wanted to make more complex projects, but I did feel that I expand in my knowledge of glazing techniques and actually employed more that I knew that I didn't do before because I was complacent. I liked many of my projects and felt that I really expanded the way I did things. I also felt that with my focus being on making my projects and technically perfect as I could possibly make them helped me to become a better ceramics art creator. In the end my theme goal was accomplished because I did create many simple projects with complex glazes. I let glazes take center stage so that I could see if that could actually make a piece visually interesting. I definitely think a simple project can be made interesting with a complex glaze. l. Theme 3- Simple large bowl, all glazed in matte teal.
Theme 2- vase bowl in a standard shape. Half glazed in midnight blue, half in speckled white. Vase- wide vase glazed in a shiny light green and partial white, well fitting lid. Wide bowl- vase like bowl with exaggerated lip. Inside glazed in green outside in white. ll. To create the simple project I wanted the design of the project to be a good standard. I wanted it to look like the perfect average bowl or vase. The glazing I chose to make more complex and wanted them to stand out on the simple piece. lll. The goal of the my theme was simplicity and creating projects that exemplified what the perfect example of a bowl or vase or plate would be. I wanted them to be clean, simple, and almost blunt in their depiction of what a standard is. I wanted the glaze to be complex and to take center stage. I think that my theme is going to be movement. Movement is very versatile and open to interoperation. I really want to work on making projects that are untraditional and have a more free form than the traditional project. I also want to glazing in a more abstract way, that has lots of shape, and volume, not just one glaze, or dipped half and half.
Skills: this quarter I have been throwing projects, and pulling up the walls. I like making vases so I use choking a lot. I also use the blue rib tool to shape my projects. I also like to make various lips. I can foot my projects. Art elements: I use negative space, movement, pattern, 3D elements, and contrast to make my projects visually interesting. Creative ideas: I want to make my lidded project with a different lid than we usually make. I also want to make a really big bowl that I could put fruit in or something. I like to make plates too so maybe I'll try to make different types of plates. |
